Lots of fruit please… But this is not Science

We are learning about fruit again… But this time it’s not connected to our ‘keeping healthy’ science topic. If you have walked past the year 5 classroom over the last few days you may have heard some fantastic performances of the poem ‘fruits’ by Valerie Bloom. After having some fun performing the poem as a group, we delved deeper into the features of the poem. We learnt that Valerie Bloom uses rhyming couplets and discovered that some words are spelt phonetically. Our task for this week is create our own poems which use the same features as ‘fruits’!

Our favourite verse is:

“One guinep up in the tree
Hanging down there tempting me
It don’ mek no sense to pick it,
One guinep can’t feed a cricket.”

What do you think it means?

A healthy start

This morning year 5 and the rest of WCPS were treated to a very special performance of a play about how we could change our lifestyle to help improve our health. Luckily year 5 are learning about this in science this term, so we used this opportunity to demonstrate our expertise by writing a review of the play. Watch this space to see our reviews…

On the pulse

Today year 5 were measuring how much their pulse rate changed before, during and after exercise. We learnt what is meant by the term ‘resting heart rate’ and ‘recovery period’. After some initial trouble locating some of our pulses (don’t worry… We found them eventually), we noticed a pattern in our results. Thanks to some accurate measurements and lots of scientific discussion, we learnt that our heart has to work harder during exercise to pump blood round our body.

The legend of St George

As it was St George’s day, year 5 continued our literacy work on ‘Myths and Legends’ by learning about the legend of St George. We went outside to soak up the atmosphere of a typically ‘fresh’ English morning and stretched our imagination learning muscle to visualise what Barnsley might have looked like thousands of years ago!

We just had time to read the legend of St George and the dragon before it started raining. Back in the warm and dry classroom we stretched our second learning muscle of the morning, collaborating in pairs to identify all the key features of a legend including the author’s use of ‘heroic language’.

Keeping Healthy

Year 5 have got off to a fantastic start to the summer term this week showing a great attitude to learning and a mature approach to their work.

We have been learning all about ‘fables’ this week in literacy, using our noticing learning muscle to find out what makes them unique and interesting. Watch this space to find out how year 5 got on at using our newly acquired knowledge of fables to construct our very own…

Today, we had our first Science lesson of the term and learnt about the nutritional value of different foods. We looked at the left over wrappers from dinner time and decided what types of food make ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ meals by designing our own plates of food!
